Joomla! overview
Joomla! is a powerful Open Source content management system for building professional Web sites easily. It is often the system of choice for small business or home users who want a professional-looking site that's simple to deploy and use. It can deliver a robust enterprise-level Web site as well, empowered by endless extensibility for your bespoke publishing needs. Joomla! is different from the normal models for content management software. For a start, it's not complicated.
Joomla! has been developed for everybody, and anybody can develop it further. Similarly to the Firefox browser, the core system can be extended via easily installable add-ons authored by the developer community. The comprehensive internationalization of Joomla! 1.5.x supports right to left languages (e.g., Hebrew or Arabic) and extended character sets. Dozens of language packs can be separately downloaded. This is a server-side application which can be run locally on your Mac.
What's new in version 6.2.0
Joomla 6.2 is a new minor version. We're bringing some exciting new features, security and code improvements.
Content Editing Upgrades (TinyMCE)
- Media Manager integration: adding images and media has become easier with the updated picker that now opens the Joomla Media Manager.
- Link selector modal: new link-picker letting the article, contact and menu editor-xtd buttons insert links through a unified modal picker.
- Read More integration: The new Read More button provides a quicker way to insert article breaks.
- Joomla text filter used by default: TinyMCE now defers to Joomla's own text filter configuration instead of its own valid-elements defaults.
- TinyMCE updated: Untranslated buttons in the TinyMCE toolbar builder were fixed, and TinyMCE itself was updated.
Articles and Categories
- Separate image and figure classes: Article intro/full-text images now have independent CSS class fields for the image and its surrounding figure element providing more styling control.
- Subcategory images: can be shown in category lists and blogs for content, contacts, and newsfeeds.
- Category display with future-published articles: Fixes categories appearing empty when their articles are scheduled for future publication.
Modules
- Additional Login Module configuration options: New options let admins hide the "Forgot your password?" and "Forgot your username?" links without a template override.
- Deeper menu dropdowns: Fixes submenu toggling for nested menu levels, improving navigation through multi-level dropdowns in the standard menu layout.
Administrator
- Grouped Fancy Select search results: Search results now include their group name, making matches easier to identify (very useful in module positions).
- New backend Joomla! Help page: A complete overhaul of the Joomla Help! page to provide a design more aligned with the Atum admin template and improved navigation within the help pages.
Installation and Security
- Improved installation error handling: reports failures more precisely during the web installer.
- Security flag for extension updates: Developers can flag a release as a security update (severity None to Critical); flagged updates are highlighted in System -> Update -> Extensions and on the dashboard quick icon.

Joomla has had 486 vulnerabilities found so far over its lifetime. You can review them over at CVEdetails.com The dev has provided security advise and documentation at https://docs.joomla.org/Security - - There's also a dedicated web developer security page. Open Source does NOT, despite dreams to the contrary, equal security. As I say, we're still in the Dark Age of computing. There are going to be coding errors, including and especially security flaws. Coder beware. Also know that Joomla is sponsored by Rochen, an independent web hosting company who of course have financial interest. Amusingly, if you check out the Rochen website, you'll find obvious HTML errors. (o_0) Be careful out there.

I've been using Joomla to build beautiful dynamic sites, and give clients the ability to update their own content without much fuss. There is a learning curve from the admin side, but that gives you a huge amount of power and capability. You can compartmentalize access to specific areas for different users, and it allows you to just use templates or easily jump into the underlying code. If you are building a set of static pages, it is overkill, but for any kind of dynamic content it rocks! The crew that builds it pays attention to security, too, so less worries on that end. Spanks Wordpress, and much easier than Drupal to get started. Most hosting plans have it available as a one-click install. Check it out!
